Wishes on the Water

This typographic project investigates how a single ritual — the floating of water lanterns — can carry different meanings across cultures. By examining Thailand’s Loi Krathong and New York’s Water Lantern Festival, the work contrasts emic and etic perspectives to explore how shared symbols shift through cultural lenses. The visual approach draws inspiration from paper textures and handmade qualities to reflect the tactile nature of the ritual. Deliverables include 2 posters and an informational booklet that blend typography and design to express both the contrasts and connections between the two traditions.
